Amparo Gutierrez elementary school celebrated its 25 year milestone in grand style. Principal Claudia C. Dovalina-Guzman and Assistant Principal Michelle Cantu co-hosted the event. The guest roster included UISD Board Members, Superintendent Roberto J. Santos, several District officials, former and present teachers and administrators. Former Principal Rita Peters, who opened the school in 1992, was also in attendance. Members of the Amparo Gutierrez family, including Mrs. Odilia Yzaguirre (daughter of the late Amparo Gutierrez), were presented with tokens of appreciation for the families’ innumerable contributions to education and the District.
Other highlights of the affair included the presentation of colors by the school’s safety patrol, tributes by the 5th grade National Elementary Honor Society, and a musical performance by the Honors Choir. Principal Dovalina-Guzman summed up the event as an opportunity to honor the school’s past and present. “As we reflect on the success that our school has experienced over the last 25 years, we recognize the significant amount of teamwork and collaboration that has existed between all the different stakeholders represented here and how their love and passion for working with students and providing support to one another has truly given our students positive direction for life”, said Dovalina-Guzman.
